Vintage Vanity Makeover

Hello friends! It's been a few days since I last posted. I've been having computer issues but I think they are resolved. Anywho, I wanted to share a weekend find with you. The hubby and I got up Saturday morning and went to a couple of yard sales. I have been wanting to change out the nightstands in our room for a vanity on my side and a chest of drawers on his. And, of course, I was in the market for something thrifty! 

Well, we didn't find anything good at the first place we stopped. There are normally several vendors set up in the same area, but only 3 or 4 were set up that day. So, we drove through town and spotted another one and pulled in. The lady was selling things for $5 per bag full. I was thrilled since she had some great stuff. I bought two bags full of stuff which I will share soon. I immediately spotted this vanity and asked her how much it was. She said that it looked to her like it would fit in a bag, so $5! I was tickled pink...or should I say green since that's what color it was. Sorry I didn't get a before shot with all the drawers in but we had taken them out to load it and I was too lazy to put them back in for a pic!

Here she is on my old paint table. Lovely shade of green...right? 

Even more lovely that the green paint job was the green ivy leaves painted all over it. See it on the drawers! And, this piece was cruddy....I had my work cut out for me.

Some of the hardware was missing, but there was enough of the original handles to put back on the four large drawers. I left out the wide drawer in the middle since it doesn't fit right, and created knobs for the two small drawers. I had two of these glass look knobs left from a previous project. Problem is they wouldn't cover the original holes where the handles had been. Then I remembered these pretty metal pieces I had pulled off an old vintage lampshade before trashing it a couple years ago, I knew I would use them someday. The hubs drilled holes in the center of the metal pieces, along with a hole in the drawer front, and here is how it turned out with the glass knobs. I love them! The original hardware is really pretty too. I gave them all a coat of gold paint to brighten them up a bit.

Here is the after shot. I am not finished with the center space where I left the drawer out. I am thinking about lining it with some pretty gift wrap I have. I am not sure yet though. I had the stool in my craft room that was being used with the vanity turned sewing table last year. I moved it to my room and am using my vintage sewing chair at the sewing table now.

The hubby and I have plans to remodel our room but it is one of the last projects on our list. We will be putting in new flooring, a plank wall, a new light fixture, a sliding barn door, two board and batten walls, and bead board on the fourth wall. Until then, I am updating a bit here and there. I love that the new vanity fit just perfectly in this spot! As for the decor, I already had the large mirror above my old nightstand, but I added two other smaller, circular mirrors. I will look for more as I visit thrift stores and yard sales. I would like to have a couple more small ones. They are all different metallics.

 I have had the candle chandelier for years. I bought it at Yankee Candle Company.

I need to put new tea lights in it. 

My bedside lamp and a few other items are closest to the bed.

The other end holds my lotions, perfumes and some pretties. Lots of silver and crystal...:)

My Granny Willie Mae's vintage faux pearl necklace and another pearl necklace live in this sweet silver dish, along with a couple purse sized perfumes that came with my full size bottles. Gifts from my kids...:)

A couple vintage earrings sit beneath this little glass cloche.

Another recent addition to our room was a new 3 inch memory foam topper. It was recommended by Suzan from Simply Vintageous. I had been wanting to try one but finally made up my mind to do it after her good review and all the other good reviews on Amazon. I also finally put our new duvet cover on as well. I ordered it from Overstock last year and had never put it on the bed. I ordered new 700 thread count sheets too, so it feels like we are sleeping on a cloud now! 

I love the colors in the duvet....shades of grey, white, and a pale mustard yellow color. I have to buy two new pillows for the shams and they will go in the back behind the grey pillows. I have plans to make a headboard as well since we haven't had one since we downsized from a king to a queen a couple years ago.

I am loving the changes so far. It was definitely needed!

I'll leave you with a few random photos. I love these sweet little flowers. This was taken in the evening. The flowers close up every evening and open again in the morning. This is a wild violet. The leaves remind me of clover.

I came home from work the other day and it was raining. I had to take a picture of the raindrops on the leaves....so pretty!

And, I just love this photo of one of my camellias. It was high up on the bush and when I went to snap the picture, I noticed the sun shining through the trees. I love it!

A Creative Day!

Well...I did it! I found some time to be creative today...:)

I started with the little stool I bought on yesterday's treasure hunt.

I made a cover for the top because it was damaged. I also painted the base aqua blue. I like the way it turned out but I really wanted to paint it turquoise. I had a brand new can of paint too...and wouldn't you know, it wouldn't spray right. I switched the nozzle and it still didn't work, so I will exchange it next time I go to town. So bummed! I was too impatient to wait, so I chose aqua and switched fabrics and came up with this. 

It's a sweet little stool...:)

I made the cover from a dress I purchased some time back just for the fabric. It is a lightweight denim with roses. So pretty and should be durable too. I didn't attach it permanently, so I can untie it to wash it when it gets dirty.

I didn't repaint the wicker, but am wondering if I should. It is a little shabby, but I think it looks OK. What do you think? For now it is in the guest room, but one day it will reside on my porch.

After I finished that project, I decided to make a cover for my sewing machine. I've been meaning to do this forever and finally got around to it. I used a vintage pillowcase I thrifted recently. 

I added some buttons and ribbons to the sides to keep it closed.

I love the yellow roses on this pillowcase. 

After that project was complete, I decided to do something with this box I brought home from school.

It used to hold crayons. When I emptied it, I thought it would be perfect to hold bits and pieces in my craft room. I didn't want to cover it, so I unfolded it and turned it inside out and put it back together. I have done that before with other boxes and it is really easy. This box is very sturdy! I love the plain brown cardboard....and just look at all those compartments. 

I filled them all up! These are embellishments for crafting tags and such.

I wrapped some washi tape around it to dress it up a bit.

And here it is on the shelf. I have another one at school that has 10 compartments that is almost empty. I will bring it home when I empty it and use it to hold more embellishements or maybe lace.

In between crafting, I cleaned and reorganized my big desk. It was piled high with stuff that needed to be put away. You can see the Scrabble lazy Susan that I shared yesterday. 

Here is a close-up. It holds my glass bucket filled with ribbon scraps and ric rac as well as my twine  holder and some small jars filled with alphabet stamps and beads.

The center holds my glitter salt and pepper shakers and several apothecary jars filled with wood craft supplies.

The left side holds my revolving bin and a jar filled with ribbon.

I just love the look of vintage sheets all stacked up. I have more in a cubby below the basket.

I worked on a couple mirror makeovers too but will share those later in the week since this post is getting long. It felt good to get in my craft room today and clean it up, reorganize a bit, and get crafty! I have had so little time for it lately. I hope to get back in there tomorrow night to reorganize my Etsy inventory. I have so many things and am running out of room for it all. I pray each of you has a blessed week. Two Thrifty Makeovers...A TV Tray & an Ironing Board

Happy Tuesday everyone! I mentioned last week that I picked up an item from Goodwill that I would share soon. Well, I am here to share it now! It's nothing too exciting, but I got this really nice TV tray for $1.99. I actually needed one of these and knew I couldn't beat this deal. There was nothing wrong with  the tray and I could have left it as it was, but I thought I needed a little something.

A little spray paint makes such a big difference. I used some chevron patterned contact paper to create the design. Much easier than measuring and taping it off. I decided to use two colors for more interest. I like the way it turned out!

I decided to leave some of the natural wood so I taped off a strip around the base and left the legs wood too.

I think it's super cute for $1.99!

Now...the other little before and after I am sharing is one of my projects that I have had sitting in the craft room for about 10 months! Yes...sometimes I am a procrastinator! And, sometimes I just forget I have it or don't know exactly what I want to do with a piece. That was the case with the little ironing board you see below. I originally had a plan to cover it with a pretty fabric and stencil a quote on it and hang it in the laundry room. Well, I tried it and didn't like it...at all! So, it sat in the craft room for months until I knew what I wanted to do with it. 

I had the hubby add a shelf to it (just like we did with my minty mirror makeover) and then I sprayed it with chalkboard paint. 

And, then I hung it on the wall in my laundry room. I added a fun little saying on it that will be changed out occasionally. My next one will say....The Laundry Room....LOADS of Fun! Insert sarcasm here...laundry is not my favorite chore!

 I added a few items I shopped the house for and have a sweet little spring vignette in the laundry room. 

I'm so not an artist (although my kinders think I am), but I drew a little clothesline at the top just for fun. Yeah...my pants legs are not even but I didn't fix it...lol!

So, that's the end of my projects for now. I am hoping to knock out a couple more over the weekend. I have several things that need to be completed so I can free up some space in the craft room closet. 

I am only two days into the work week and am so exhausted. Kindergarten takes so much energy! I am already looking forward to the weekend...:) Hope your week is going well and thanks so much for stopping by!

LOVEly Art for the Master Bedroom

First off, I want to say thanks for the sweet comments some of you left about my minty green mirror makeover. You ladies are the best!

I was inspired by a couple of my blog friends recently to create a little something special in my master bedroom. First, Cecilia inspired me with the love vignette she created in her and her hubby's bedroom. I thought it was so sweet! You can see and read about it at Cecilia's blog...The B Farm. I was also inspired by Tina's creation at The Cluttered Corkboard. Both of these sweet ladies are super creative and you'll enjoy getting to know them if you don't already!

So...we will start with a J for Joey (my sweet hubby)...

Why you get this.....

Love the crystals hanging from the middle frame. I had everything on hand for this project and put my own little twist on it and here you go.

I chose to paint the two small frames black and the large one gold and then painted the text the opposite color of the frames. 

I backed them with a beautiful sheer fabric that actually came from a swimsuit cover-up that I of course purchased from a thrift store. I often buy a garment for the buttons or the fabric if it is priced right. I hot glued the letters and ampersand directly on the fabric.

The frames were all thrifted and just waiting for the right project. The gold one had been painted pink and was used in my craft room for a time but I had taken it down recently. The letters and ampersand were purchased very inexpensively at Michael's.

Here's a close-up of the sheer fabric with my hand behind it. 

And...here's the final product on my sheet music wall in my bedroom. This wall was a temporary fix for some plain drywall that had never been painted. A few years ago we had a leak and had to tear out and replace some drywall and I just never got around to painting it. So about three years ago, I just decided to cover it with sheet music! I had the sheet music and attached it to the wall using my own mod-podge I made with Elmer's Glue and called it done. It looks much better than unpainted drywall...:) And...it's the perfect backdrop for my new art!

I am in love with this project and even more in love with my dear hubby after all these years...:) 

I am blessed to have such a wonderful man to call my own.
