A Kitchen Update and some Organizational Finds

Hello friends.....I hope this finds you all rested and well. I have had a nice weekend. One of my oldest and dearest friends, Shelleen came over last night for dinner and she spent the night. Her birthday is Tuesday, so I cooked her a yummy supper and we watched a movie and just enjoyed catching up and visiting. We were going to go for a boat ride today but our boat battery wouldn't charge, so we have to buy a new battery before we get to go boating. Oh well, we enjoyed a lazy day anyway! The hubby and I went to town yesterday to buy groceries and of course, we stopped by the flea market for a few minutes. I found a few items which I will share in a bit, but first, I want to share a few recent finds that I already have in place in my kitchen. In fact, some of them were inspiration for a few changes in my kitchen decor. It was time for an update! I really can't wait to totally gut the kitchen and start over, but since that's not in the budget right now, I thought I would use some of my thrifty finds to give it a cost free update!

First up is this vignette near my sink. I bought the black metal basket Friday after work at a yard sale for $2. The other black basket thingie was bought last weekend at the Goodwill. I thought it would hold pint jars, but no such luck. I did have these little muffin bakers that look like little flower pots that fit perfectly, so I put those in it. I repainted the stand the plant is sitting on and put the plant in a different pot. I love how it all turned out.

This is the window over the sink. I sat the metal painted tray in the windowsill as well as a little rusty silver basket thing I bought at the same yard sale for $1. I have no idea what its' original purpose was. If anyone has an idea, please let me know. It is about 12 inches long and very narrow, maybe an inch and a half or two inches wide. The handle has a design engraved in it. I have no clue what it was used for! Anywho, I found the pie crust shield at the flea market yesterday for $2. I will actually use it.

On the corner of the counter is a solid wood sudoku game board I bought at the Goodwill for $2. I bought the game for the number tiles, but the solid wood board was so pretty on the back, that I kept it to use as a base. Right now it holds my fruit basket, napkin holder, and my meds/vitamins that I take daily. The other side just has a grid painted on it.

I gave the coffee station a couple little updates. I brought some of the containers/canisters from my craft room to use in the kitchen. I still need to put labels in the three canisters on the right side.

This is on the left side of my stove. I bought the white ironstone container at TJ Maxx and love it. It was the true inspiration for the mini makeover. It was the only new thing I bought...everything else I already owned or thrifted.

The other side of the stove has a metal basket I bought for $2 at the Goodwill last weekend. I repainted the frame of the marker board. It used to be red. I also changed out the paper I had inside and replaced it with burlap.

Above the cabinets I placed several ironstone pieces. My tureens and a few of my white pitchers, as well as my vintage cheese dome now reside there.

I changed out the message on my tray turned chalkboard.

On the other side of the upper cabinets I used this wooden checker board I bought for a couple dollars, along with a tureen and a fake plant.

I really like the small changes I made and it feels updated.
I mentioned the trip to the flea earlier and I found a few really good deals while there. First thing was these beautiful sea grass storage baskets. They are new and just $5 for the set. I will probably use them in my closet which needs to be cleaned out...desperately! LOL

I got this set of three bamboo trays for $1! I could not believe it. Funny thing is, I found 4 of them last weekend a the Goodwill for $1 each and was going to buy them all, but three of the four had some damage to them, so I just bought one. Now I have a set of four! They will be nice used in vignettes. I am thinking about painting them....like this or maybe this!

This vintage mail sorter was just $1. If I keep it, I will paint it...similar to this one on Etsy.

Last thing I found was this large metal and wicker tray. I don't like the color, but it's nothing a couple coats of spray paint won't fix! It was just $1 as well.

It seems my thrifting finds are always in themes. This weekend was organizational pieces. I love to find pretty pieces to organize with. I might just tackle my closet tomorrow afternoon.....might! We shall see!
Have a wonderful Monday....I know I will since I don't have to work tomorrow! I have several things on my To Do list and am hoping to cross off a few.
As always, thank for visiting. A couple of you are no reply commenters and I am unable to e-mail you comments, but I appreciate each and every one of you and always enjoy reading your kind words!
Until next time....

  1. Great updates for the kitchen - you seem to be going with more neutrals and blacks and whites. I like the change to the message board with the burlap insert. Love how you arranged the ironstone around the kitchen. Thank you for the bit of peace after a hectic day. I choose turquoise for the tray!

  2. You have been busy. What fun finds to refresh the kitchen.

I started redoing vignettes around the house on Friday - removing Valentine's Day. It is now Sunday evening and I am still not finished.

  3. Your kitchen looks great Vicky and I love all your new thrift finds! I sure wish we lived close so we could go thrifting together! We would probably end up fighting over the same things though! lol! The wicker trays are cool and I like the makeover with the chevron although I think a pop of color would be cuter than gold.

  9. I love all your little changes. Doesn't it just make you feel good to rearrange? I love to do the same thing. But, I think you have better luck at finding the treasures than I do. I need better junk stores!! Oh well, until that happens, I'll just admire your finds.

I hope you have a glorious week!

    Blessings and Grace,
    Amy
